San Francisco Chronicle Awards and A Family Story

Hi Everyone!

It’s been a long time since I’ve posted, but it’s great to be back and starting the year off with the news of awards!  We are thrilled that our 2009 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon has won a Gold Medal at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition.  Our 2009 Reserve Silken blend also was awarded a Silver Medal.  So, we did well!  This competition is one of the largest competitions of just American wines.  There will be a public tasting on February 16th in San Francisco at the Fort Mason Center, if you live in the Bay area or want to make a trip to the city.

Since these 09 Reserve wines have been receiving awards, I thought it would be neat to share a little of the back story…

Last Tuesday night, my wonderful family took me out for a birthday dinner and while we were drinking the 09 Cabernet we reminisced about the making of it, which didn’t really start out smoothly.  In years prior, my dad had worked with other winemakers on our wines, but the 09 wines would be the first time he would be making the wines himself.  It was exciting for him, but by the time harvest arrived, my dad came down with an awful, “knock you off your feet” kind of cold.  With Ethan not in the picture yet and me in school, my dad was left with no help…until my mom came to the rescue.  My mom has zero experience with wine making and suffers from chronic back pain, but she still jumped in and helped my dad take on the long days of pump overs.  The two of them worked together in the cold winery from early in the morning till late at night, until the processing was complete.  If it hadn’t been for my mom stepping in, my dad might not have gotten through those tough days.

As my mom shared at my birthday dinner about the Jack in the Box meals they had to settle with between pump overs, I sipped the 09 Cab and couldn’t help but be filled with a huge amount of love and respect for my parents and their accomplishments.  This wine and the wines that you taste really represent the hard work that my family does together.  I feel so proud of them and these awards are well deserved.

Thanks for letting me share and if you’re interested in trying our 09 Cab at the pouring on Feb 16th, tickets are available online.  And you know, you can always stop by the tasting room or order a bottle on our website as well!

Cheers and Well Wishes to the New Year!
